The man believed to be 40-year-old has attacked Westfield shopping centre in Sydney and killed six people while many several remain in critical condition on Saturday afternoon.

Five victims including four women and one man died at the centre while another woman died from her injuries in hospital. ABC News reported.

Eight others were injured including a 9-month-old child and were taken to a number of hospitals across Sydney.

Three people were taken to St Vincent's Hospital at Darlinghurst, other two at Royal Prince Alfred in Camperdown, one at St George Hospital, another at Royal North Shore Hospital and the baby has gone undergone surgery at Sydney Children's hospital at Randwick.

The reports by Police say the man was with a knife and he was in the shopping centre at 3pm.

He left the centre and returned back after 20 minutes and proceeded through the centre where he "engaged with about nine people".

Anthony Cooke, assistant commissioner of New South Wales Police Force said the police officer who was around went into the centre directed by a range of people.

"She confronted the offender who had moved, by this stage, to level five.

"As she continued to walk quickly behind to catch up with him he turned to face her, raised a knife, she discharged a firearm and that person is now deceased."

The man was known to police but the motive was unclear, but it is suggested that it wasn't related to terrorism.

"There's no suggestions anyone was targeted but that could change," Police Commissioner Karen Webb said.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said: "Tragically, multiple casualties have been reported and the first thoughts of all Australians are with those affected and their loved ones.

The Prince and Princess of Wales also sent their condolences writing on X: "We are shocked and saddened by the terrible events in Sydney earlier today. Our thoughts are with all those affected, including the loved ones of those lost and the heroic emergency responders who risked their own lives to save others."

Westfield shopping centre is to remain closed and will remain a crime scene, police said.
