Pneumonia cases increase in NSW children

Pneumonia cases are increasing in NSW children and has caused health experts to put warnings.

The numbers of children with pneumonia symptoms taken to hospital have tripled compared to January.

Only last week, 124 children aged between four and under were taken to emergency with pneumonia, while the ones aged between five and 16 were 317.

For the adults the cases were 127 in the emergency room in the same week.

The pneumonia cases are increasing as its a new bacteria and children haven’t built the immunity to yet, Professor Philip Britton, from Westmead Children’s Hospital said.

Pneumonia is the infection that inflames air sacs in one or both lungs, which may fill with fluid.

Its symptoms include a cough with phlegm or pus, fever, chills and difficulty breathing.
