London, United Kingdom – Ornella Mutoni, a seasoned documentary filmmaker with a personal connection to the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, embarks on a journey to delve into the intricate layers of healing after mass violence in her directorial debut, “One Thousand Hills Between Us.”
Mutoni’s poignant project, currently crowdfunding on Indiegogo, has garnered significant attention and support, reflecting a global interest in understanding the enduring effects of genocide and the arduous path to reconciliation. With a goal of £10,000 for production costs, the campaign has already surpassed expectations, securing $23,306 AUD from 139 backers, exceeding its original target by 121%.
“At 6 months old, my family and I fled from the genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda,” Mutoni shares. “This pivotal event in our history has fueled my curiosity about its impact on subsequent generations and the journey towards healing.”
The documentary follows Mutoni’s return to Rwanda in 2022, where she encounters Emilienne, a community healer whose resilience and dedication to reconciliation serve as a beacon of hope. Emilienne, like Mutoni, endured displacement and profound loss during the genocide. However, her decision to return to her homeland and transform it into a space for dialogue and healing inspires Mutoni’s exploration.
“Emilienne’s unwavering commitment to fostering conversations among survivors, perpetrators, and their descendants underscores the film’s central theme of intergenerational healing,” Mutoni explains.
Scheduled to be filmed in June 2024, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the genocide, “One Thousand Hills Between Us” promises to offer a nuanced perspective on the complexities of justice and reconciliation. Through the lens of a group of young adults participating in a community healing workshop, the documentary exposes the lingering trauma, unspoken secrets, and collective resilience that define Rwanda’s post-genocide landscape.
“Many young people have suffered in silence for far too long, grappling with the weight of their family histories and the legacy of violence,” Mutoni remarks. “This film aims to provide a platform for their voices to be heard and their stories to be acknowledged.”
With a dedicated team in the United Kingdom and Rwanda poised to commence production, Mutoni emphasizes the significance of communal support in bringing this vital narrative to fruition. Contributions from backers will primarily fund local crew salaries, equipment, and logistical expenses, ensuring the project’s integrity and impact.
“We are committed to upholding the wellbeing of both our team and participants throughout the filmmaking process,” Mutoni assures, highlighting the implementation of a culturally specific safeguarding and wellbeing framework supported by the OKRE film fund.
