Asian elephants are set to leave Taronga Zoo Sydney after 100 years being at wildlife park.
Female elephants Tang Mo and Pak Boon currently residing at the park will leave in mid-2025.
The pair have been at Taronga Zoo Sydney since 2006, coming from Thailand with three others to initiate a breeding program.
The migration is part of projet named Taronga’s “Great migration” of moving into new open-range of 14-hectare in South Australia called Monarto Safari Park.
Three other elephants from Auckland Zoo and Perth Zoo will also join the pair at Monarto.
Taronga Conservation Society Australia CEO Cameron Kerr said they will miss them and he thank the Kingdom of Thailand for the ongoing partnership.
He also thank keepers and staff who have cared the elephants for almost two decades.
Zoos SA Chief Executive Elaine Bensted said Monarto can’t wait to welcome the elephants and believes they will benefit being in a social herd.
